One of the great pains of previous versions has been the ability to manipulate strokes. Thankfully, Adobe has considered what worked and, more importantly, what did not: the main feature additions center on actual drawing. If you enjoyed this tutorial please share it with your friends with the social links on the left. With the latest incarnation of the Adobe Suite, Illustrator CS5 brings a slew of new features and improvements to one of my favorite apps. OK thats all for this tutorial, thanks for reading. On the bottom of the Brushes panel choose Options of Selected Object and change the scale for the brush. There are several ways to resize the brush including: change the stroke weight of the path, change the scale in the Pattern Brush window, or change the scale in the Options of Selected Objects window. Since I chose a Colorization method all i have to do is change the stroke color of the path to change the chain color. Now that we have a chain brush, create a path then select the Chain brush from the brushes panel to apply the chain to the Path. If you want to recolor the chain later on choose a Colorization method of Hue shift and make sure the Key color is the main color of your chain (orange in my case). In the Start Tile position choose the last chain link that we added to swatches. In the Side Tile position choose the first chain we made with the repeat box. Give the brush a name, I chose Chain brush. Open the Brushes Panel and from the Fly-Out menu chose New Brush… Then choose Pattern Brush Also drag the left side chain that we moved out of the way earlier into the Swatches panel (no need for a repeat box here). Take the chain with the repeat box that we just worked on and drag it into the Swatches panel. Step 7: Drag the chain pieces into Swatches Then delete the left side chain and repeat box and go back to View / Preview. Now the repeat boxes aren’t lining up so take the right side repeat box and adjust it so it matches up with the left box, see below. Select the chain and the repeat box and drag a copy of them both to the right (hold Option or Alt) so that the chain lines up. To make sure the chain lines up properly lets go into View / Outline. Set the rectangle to transparent fill and stroke and then right click and choose Arrange / Send to Back to send the rectangle behind the chain.

Make sure Smart Guides are on (View Menu) and with the Rectangle Tool selected create a rectangle that lines up with the right side of the chain like you see in the image below.

Move or hide the left chain for now as we dont need it yet. This step is the trickiest part! In order for the chain to overlap properly we need to create a transparent box (we’ll call it a Repeat box) ‘behind’ the chain otherwise, our chain wont overlap the way we want when we make the brush. Step 6: Set the repeat of the right side chain I changed the fill of the chains to orange so it looks more like a chain. This will combine the overlapped areas to make the chains ‘look’ linked. Select both chains with the Selection Tool and then with the Shape Builder Tool click and drag across the chains like you see in the images below. Step 5: Use the Shape Builder Tool to link the chains

Take the Selection Tool and drag the chain over while holding the Option or Alt keys to create a second chain (let go of the mouse first to drop the copy). This will knock out the small circle shape from the larger circle. Select both circles and with the Shape Builder Tool, hold the Option or Alt keys and click on the small circle. Step 3: Knock out a hole into the bottom circle
ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR CS5 ELLIPSE TOOL REGISTRATION
Under the Transform Panel set the registration point to the middle and set the height and width to. With the circle created in Step 1 selected go to Edit / Copy then Edit / Paste in Front to paste a copy right on top. I entered 1” for the width and height and then press OK. So lets get to it…įirst, take the Ellipse Tool and click on the canvas to pull up the Ellipse Options. You will need Illustrator CS5 and up to use the Shape Builder Tool, but if you dont have CS5 you can use the Pathfinder Panel for steps 3 and 5.
ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR CS5 ELLIPSE TOOL PLUS
There are lots of different ways to make chains but I think this method shows some very good concepts with the Shape Builder tool, plus it keeps the chain very simple with just 2 objects. In this tutorial ill show you a few tricks to help create a simple chain pattern brush in Adobe Illustrator.
